Sample Problem for Exam 3

Model and solve the problem below in ANSYS and answer the questions at the bottom of the page.

Steel beams, welded at all joints (E = 29x106 psi, Poisson's ratio = 0.3, density = 0.283 lbm/cu.in).
Cross-section data: hollow, square cross section, outer side length is 3.0 in. and wall thickness is 0.15 in.

The base beam is 8 feet long, midway between the ends, a vertical member extends 36 in. above the base.  The shorter horizontal member is 4 ft. long.

Loads:

Constraints:

The mass of the steel assembly:  ________________ lbm.

The maximum deflection: ________________ in.

Where does the maximum deflection occur at ?

The deflection components at the joint btw. the base and vertical member:

UX = ______ in., UY = ______ in.

The highest direct stress : ________________ psi

Where does the highest direct stress occur at ?

The highest maximum combined stress: ________________ psi

Where does the highest maximum combined stress occur at ?

The highest minimum combined stress: ________________ psi

Where does the highest maximum combined stress occur at ?
